One way in which somatic practice is profoundly life enhancing is when we apply the practice to the current epidemic of stress and burnout, which shows itself in a wide range of conditions such as high blood pressure, tension, anxiety and panic attacks.
By bringing awareness of our direct felt sense (somatic) a conversation opens up that invites our body to see if it is safe enough. In turn, our body will communicate information that can lead to a harmonious connection within our body and with the world around us.
Many – perhaps all of us – suffer from feeling overwhelmed by the anxieties of being alive in the world today. For all our privileges, the world can feel precarious and frightening. This fear is felt in the body which is hugely intelligent in its own field, and a genius at keeping us safe.
When we are not able to communicate with the body to assure it we are safe, it keeps us in a state of hyper-alertness and tension in order to help us survive. This leads to both physical and emotional discomfort and distress.
The truth is, in many ways the world is in a terrible state, and this is a survival issue. So your body is not ‘wrong’. However, remaining in this state of being excessively controlled by a part of the body that is continually operating in an automatic mode of trying to keep us alive escalates our anxiety and eventually leads to burnout. With practice, we can learn to listen to and trust the fuller experience of bodily sensations that convey more accurate information about safety.
In my experience we move towards wellness when our body connects with a sense of safety. These life changing and at once playful practices reconnect us with the foundations of safety that something in us may have lost sight of.
