Learning to listen to our bodily sensations can lead us to a wellspring of self-trust, health, connection and joy thereby alleviating unnecessary suffering and helping us tune-in to what is natural and life affirming. In this way – integrating sensing, feeling and action – we can more fully align our actions with our deepest values.
In its simplest terms, Somatic Health is about connecting to the living body in its fluid and ever-changing state. It’s about feeling comfortable inside our own skin and inviting playfulness. There’s an element of patience involved: staying with bodily sensations without jumping to interpretation and not forcing insights and answers before they come fully formed.
It is through the body that we receive a direct felt experience (somatic) of feeling alive, an invitation into an always-already-available state of awareness, starting even now as we read these words.
In our society we seem to have an embedded belief that the mind and body are separate, and that to be successful in this life we must exercise ‘mind-over-body.’ This undercurrent implies that the body’s wisdom arises from a lower impulse, while the intellectual mind is supreme.
Somatic Health is not anti-intellect at all; mind and body can work together as a harmonious whole, and I invite you to listen to the murmurings of both. So, if we can re-balance the equation and pay closer attention to the body, we may discover important messages that can bring us comfort and immense wellbeing.
